Our History

 

Old Walcountians Hockey Club was formed in 1953, but Wallington Ladies (who moved to the Clockhouse in 1992 and merged with the Old Walcountians Men’s Club) were formed in 1899. With the joining of Purley Hockey Club in 2002 we were then renamed Purley Walcountians Hockey Club in order to incorporate all the founding clubs.

 

Adult Hockey

We have around 100 adult members and currently field 4 men’s teams and 2 ladies’ teams. Our top two Men’s teams play their league fixtures in the London Area, the rest of our teams play in the South East area. In the 2022/23 season, 4 of our adult teams finished in the top 4 of their leagues including our Men's 2nd team who won their league and are promoted! 

 

Youth Hockey

We have over 100 colts in teams from Under 8 (mixed teams), up to Under 18 Boys’ and Under 18 Girls’ teams. Our younger members are encouraged and supported to enter the England Hockey Player Pathway through a series of regional centres of excellence. We have an excellent volunteer member support structure for our younger players. Our coaches go into local schools to help the development and playing of hockey to 5-11 year olds. Every summer we run free taster sessions for new young players to encourage them to get fit and exercise and to enjoy the game of hockey.

 

Facilities

We have a fully floodlit AstroTurf pitch, rebuilt in 2007. In 2015 the pitch was again completely replaced to improve the playing surface. We offer out the facilities for hire to local hockey and football clubs, as well as several local schools. We are one of the few hockey clubs in the county that offer playing and social facilities on the same site.

 

Events

We run summer hockey for local Men’s, Ladies and Mixed teams. We also host the annual Riverside tournament, which is held at the Sports Club with over 60 teams attending and camping is available.

  

Social

We run a number of social events throughout the year including an Après Ski party, a Xmas party and our annual awards night Dinner and Dance. We  also work with the other sports clubs in WSC and attend their events.
